Application Due Date: April 30, 2021 (5PM)

We are pleased to announce the sixth annual Hatch Family Scholar Award Competition for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at the University of Utah. The purpose of this award is to honor the Hatch family by rewarding a junior research scientist that is conducting research in the field of Type 1 Diabetes. A minimum prize of $1000 will be awarded. Prizes are subject to federal tax regulations.

Eligibility criteria:

This award is intended to recognize an outstanding research trainee (registered as a doctoral student or postdoctoral fellow) at the University of Utah. Students and postdocs may be from any department across the University of Utah campus whose research encompasses Type 1 Diabetes or diabetic complications. Priority will be given to trainees whose research is targeted at finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Applicants are required to submit a recommendation letter from their faculty supervisor. Multiple entries per lab are permitted.

Application Instructions:

Applications and all supporting documents should be compiled as one PDF and submitted electronically through the University of Utah’s Competition Space interface at http://utah.infoready4.com/ by April 30 at 5pm.
Applications must include:

  1. Applicant’s CV. Please submit a complete CV that includes institutions attended, degrees or certifications earned, research presentations and publications (names of all authors, title of report, and name of journal)
  2. Abstract. Please submit an abstract suitable for a lay audience that highlights the context and importance of your work. Abstract must be less than 250 words.
  3. Essay. Please include an essay that outlines your scientific contributions over the course of your tenure as a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow at the University of Utah. Please include a title of the research essay at the top of the page.
  4. Statement of Commitment to Diabetes Research and Future Career Goals. Please submit a statement of your personal commitment to diabetes research and detail your future career goals. Please limit this section to 250 words.
  5. Recommendation Letter. Please submit a recommendation letter from your faculty supervisor that critically evaluates your contribution and role in the research. Evidence of the applicant’s originality and independence are of particular importance. For applicants whose projects are collaborative and result in papers with multiple authors, nomination letters should comment explicitly on the applicant’s individual contribution to the entire study.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee consisting of at least one Diabetes and
Metabolism Research Center faculty member and two members of the Hatch Family. The lay
abstract will be critical for the family member to understand the applicant’s contribution to the
Type 1 Diabetes field. Selection of recipient(s) will be based on research portfolio, interest in
pursuing a career in diabetes research, and potential as a research investigator.

To receive this award, the selected prize winner must present a lecture on their research at an
upcoming Seminars in Metabolism lecture or another venue in June 2021.
