2021 Utah Genome Project Call for Pilot Projects

Award Amount: Up to $50,000

Application Due Date: April 5, 2021

Overview

Philanthropic donations to the Center for Genomic Medicine will support 4-5 Utah Genome Project pilot awards. The maximum budget for each award is $50,000.The mission of Utah Genome Project is to investigate the genetic basis of human disease through sequencing (DNA, RNA, other) of Utah families to discover, understand, prevent and treat challenging medical conditions. The goals of Utah Genome Project are to build infrastructure and best-practice standards and make this available to Utah clinicians and researchers to promote genomic discovery, discover novel disease-causing genes and pathways to improve diagnosis, testing and treatment of human disease.

Timeline

  • Deadline for submission is April 5, 2021, midnight local time.
  • Decisions will be made by May 30, 2021
  • Funding to start July 1, 2021

Research Scope

We invite applications that build upon the mission of Utah Genome Project as stated above. Areas of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • Therapeutics to solve key problems in diseases with a strong genetic component, and/or use genetic or genomic approaches as part of their therapeutic development strategy.
  • Clinical or public health translation and impact of genomic medicine and discoveries
  • Landscape of human somatic mosaicism
  • Large scale screens of functional variants
  • Multi-omic integration
  • Studies exploring the variability of penetrance and expressivity of human genetic conditions
  • Clinical implementation of multi-SNP and polygenic risk score
  • Development of new computational or statistical methods that empower genomic medicine

We strongly encourage projects to consider the following:

  • Clinical implementation
  • Diversity
  • Ethical Legal and Social Implications (ELSI)

Eligible Applicants

  • Only one research proposal per principal investigator (PI) will be reviewed.
  • PI must be an early career investigator OR an investigator new to this field of research OR an established investigator developing a demonstratively new research direction.
  • PI must be a member of the Center for Genomic Medicine. If you are not already a member, you may join by completing a brief survey. Please contact ashley.kapron@hsc.utah.edu if you have any questions.
  • PI must be a tenure- or career-track faculty at the University of Utah.

Proposal Preferences

Preference will be given to projects that include all four of the following features:

  • Have significant scientific merit.
  • Have a high potential for extramural funding, preferentially from the NIH.
  • Are not currently supported by extramural funding.
  • Represent work from new collaborative teams.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with University resources to build a competitive application.
