Jeff Morgan, a postdoctoral fellow with Jared Rutter, PhD, in the department of biochemistry at University of Utah Health, was selected as a 2019 STAT Wunderkind. The national competition celebrates the next generation of scientific superstars. “Most discoveries start with something unexpected, and then somebody who is willing, maybe dumb enough, to work it out,” says Morgan. In this case, that modest “somebody” is him. His graduate work at MIT upended dogma and his postdoctoral research is poised to do the same. He is investigating the role of RNA in sensing the changing metabolome in cancer onset and progression. Insights gleaned from his research could lead to new approaches to combating the disease. His penchant for blazing new trails is poised to pay off.
