June Round’s drive to learn about creatures great and small. That fascination continues as she explores the puzzling relationship between humans and the trillions of bacteria that live in our bodies. “We think of these organisms as causing disease,” she says, then raises an eyebrow. “What we’re learning is that when you lose them, you get disease.” Understanding our microbiome is providing new insights into treating a variety of health conditions. Following in her teacher’s footsteps, Round brings young students into her lab, introducing them to life’s little mysteries. Once ignited, who knows where their curiosity will lead them.
