In early June, faculty development and education leaders from across the US came together for the New Leadership Academy (NLA) annual board meeting as part of the NLA Summer Institute.
The New Leadership Academy Fellows Program (NLA) is a partnership between the University of Utah and the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE). This was the first NLA board meeting hosted at the University of Utah, and the first one held since NLA moved from its home at the University of Michigan. Founding leaders of NLA Drs Betty Overton and John Burkhardt were present, along with University of Utah Leaders Drs Amy Fulton, Mary Ann Villarreal and José Rodríguez. Special Advisor to the governor of the state of Utah, Nubia Peña, JD was also in attendance.
In this activity, we went over the goals of the NLA, and we learned that moving to Utah was an expansion of the program, with 49 fellows this year—6 of which are faculty at University of Utah Health. We also discussed threats and successes and brainstormed on ways to ensure that NLA meets the needs of our new leaders.
