Dear Colleagues, It is with mixed feelings that I announce the retirement of Jim Turnbull as our Chief Information Officer (CIO). Jim has selected May 1, 2020 to officially retire. He had a very momentous career of over 40 years working both in the Canadian and American health systems. Since 2008, he has served with distinction as the CIO for U of U Health’s Hospitals and Clinics. As the CIO of our very complex academic medical center, Jim lead a team that fully deployed the EpicCare EMR suite, including revenue cycle. He also worked to create a robust project management foundation for use by the IT team. Jim led an effort to update the IT strategic plan and, most importantly, worked with the University CIO to implement enhanced campus-wide security protocols, network infrastructure upgrades, encryption policies, and many other important University initiatives. Over the years, Jim has brought significant recognition to U of U Health. We've received both the “Most Wired Innovation" award and “Most Wired" award for 8 years running. Personally he was recognized with the John E. Gall Jr. "CIO of the Year" award in 2012 and served in senior leadership roles of several non-profit organizations and professional societies. He has accomplished much and he will certainly be missed. We wish Jim well in his future plans and, before his departure, there will be other opportunities to recognize this special man and the important role he has played in the success of U of U Health. In the coming days, I will be working with HR to put together a search committee to find our next CIO.
