COVID-19 Weekly Update, March 30, 2021

The U.S. is starting to see an increase in the number of people with coronavirus, although low levels of virus transmission continue in Utah and on the U of U campus. As our local vaccination program and public health practices continue, we expect to see reduced transmission in our state. Unless trends change significantly, we will publish another video update on April 14.

This is an important moment as different industries and entities consider how to begin to emerge from the pandemic. After several weeks of consistent declines, most measures in Utah are beginning to plateau, including cases, hospitalizations, deaths, and transmission rates. We must continue to move cautiously as a community to ensure that we retain the gains we have made.

Big Benchmark in Medical Education

For seniors, Match Day may be the most eagerly anticipated event of four years at the School of Medicine. In 2021, because of pandemic safety measures, Match Day was scaled down without a lot of the usual hoopla. But for future MDs it was as significant as always and a celebration of enormous accomplishment.

COVID-19 Weekly Update, March 9, 2021

Fewer than one in 200 Utahns currently has a coronavirus infection. Continued decreases in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths, may begin to indicate that the end of the pandemic is coming within sight. As we vaccinate larger portions of our population, public health measures continue to be important to keep our community safe. Unless trends change significantly within the next week, we will offer the next update on March 23, 2021.

COVID-19 Weekly Update, March 2, 2021

One year ago, we admitted our first COVID patient to U of U Hospital ICU. This week, we vaccinated our first U of U Health patient at the Redwood Health Center. These two sentences are a testament to you all, your dedication to your community, your compassion for one another, your commitment to science, and your resiliency in showing up every day, and doing your absolute best. Declining coronavirus trends continue throughout the state. We must keep up our vaccination and public health efforts.
