On the valet team, we have ex-military personnel, we have people who are nurses or medical professionals, EMTs. We have a professor. We have a gentleman who was a vice president at an oil company.
Kyle: We have people from all kinds of walks of life and experience. I really came to enjoy the environment of the hospital: the patients, the hustle and bustle of everything... And now I've been here for eight years. It's the longest I've stayed put in one place my whole adult life. And so, you know, it's just kind of become a central kind of second home, I guess you could say.
Michael: “Alright, perfect, thank you so much. Appreciate you guys. Have a great day!”
I like being able to bring a smile to people’s face. Because, sometimes when people come into the hospital here, they’re here on their worst day.
Rebecca: You can tell, like, if you know, it's someone's first time coming up here. It is a very stressful experience to be like, “Oh, like, where do I park, where am I not gonna get ticketed?” Even though it is such a small part. You see a lot of gratitude from people.
Edgar: “Thank you, how long will you be here today? About five hours. Okay, perfect. We will park your car, okay? Okay.”
[In Spanish] I am a computer engineer with 15 years of experience. My wife was a professor of computer science at a very, very good university in Venezuela. We know that we don't handle English well. At the moment, we can be learning and improving every day. I feel that the valet parking job is more than a job for me. I feel deeply satisfied giving 100% of myself to be with patients and people.
Kyle: We serve an important function that goes beyond simply parking cars. People coming in here that have no idea what to do... Sometimes it's somebody's mother who's driving up here to meet the ambulance because her child was just airlifted off of a mountain. There's a lot of people that we know on a first-name basis that know all of our names as well. Some of them have been coming here for years. There are a lot of patients that do become like family to us. And I think they would say that we become like family to them as well. For me, it's the people.
