Post Baccalaureate Program in Cancer Research

Huntsman Cancer Institute is focused on fostering a more welcoming biomedical research workforce by pairing exceptional post-baccalaureate scholars from differing geographies and backgrounds with dedicated faculty members in a state-of-the-art cancer research facility. Scholars will engage in mentored research, cancer-focused coursework, and professional development workshops. Our goal is to cultivate a heightened interest in cancer research and strong research skills among our post-baccalaureates, equipping them for success in post-graduate endeavors.

The Post Baccalaureate program is funded by the American Cancer Society.

Kai Bunker

Kai Bunker is a post-baccalaureate researcher at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, currently working in the lab of Katie Basham in the Department of Oncological Sciences. Kai recently earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Brigham Young University. He hopes to obtain a PhD in biochemistry or cell biology so he can start his own research lab doing cancer research.

Tayler Fearn

Tayler Fearn is a post-baccalaureate researcher at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, currently working in the lab of Dr. Mary Playdon in the Department of Population Health Sciences. Tayler recently earned a bachelor’s degree in bioinformatics from Utah Valley University, graduating with honors. Tayler’s long-term goal is to pursue a PhD in biomedical data science and advance precision medicine through research that bridges molecular insights with public health impact.

Remae Mackamul

Remae Mackamul is a post-baccalaureate researcher at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, currently working in the lab of Jay Gerts in the Department of Oncological Sciences. Remae recently earned a bachelor’s degree in biology at California State University San Marcos. Remae is passionate about improving women’s health through cancer research. In the future, she hopes to earn her PhD and wants to lead research that contributes to advancing women’s health and well-being.

Paige Nelson

Paige Nelson is a post-baccalaureate researcher at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, currently working in the lab of Josh Andersen in the Department of Oncological Sciences. Paige recently earned a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Brigham Young University. She plans on earning a PhD and being involved in pushing the frontiers of cancer treatment, specifically in personalized medicine.
