        Department & Group Funding

        This funding is available to the University of Utah campus departments as well as faculty, staff, and student groups. Preference is given to requests that work with equity, inclusion, and diversity or identify as underrepresented in health sciences and/or health care. Reimbursement is based upon receipts up to $500.

        Funding is based on a first-come, first-serve basis.

        All questions must be completed for the application to be reviewed. Once completed and submitted, e-mail healthequity@hsc.utah.edu that your application has been submitted so that it can be reviewed for approval.

        Herman Hooten Travel Awards for Faculty & Staff

        University of Utah Health faculty and staff who identify as historically excluded/underrepresented are eligible to apply for travel reimbursements to attend and/or present their work at a professional meeting. Faculty/staff who will be attending/presenting at a professional conference/meeting that addresses health equity/health disparities are also eligible to apply.

        Priority is given to faculty/staff who are presenting and first-time applicants.

        Please submit your request and budget at least 2 weeks before travel is anticipated. Awards are up to $500 domestic and $750 International. Travel costs will be reimbursed based upon actual costs after return from travel. All rules from U of U Travel & Reimbursement Services apply.

        University of Utah Health students who identify as historically excluded/underrepresented are eligible to apply for travel reimbursements to attend and/or present their work at a professional meeting or other academic/research related endeavors. Students who don't identify as underrepresented but will be attending or presenting at a professional conference or meeting that addresses health equity/health disparities are also eligible to apply. Students must be in good academic standing.

        Priority is given to students who are presenting and first-time applicants.

        Awards are up to $500 domestic and $750 International. Travel costs will be reimbursed based upon actual costs after return from travel with receipts provided. All rules from U of U Travel & Reimbursement Services apply.

        Research Awards

        University of Utah Health students in good standing are eligible to apply for a research stipend. Preference will be given for students who identify as historically excluded/underrepresented and/or for work that addresses health equity/health disparities.

        Please apply online and be prepared to submit: hypothesis, specific aims, methods, and anticipated results as well as research budget at least 2 weeks prior to the start of your project. Please include a letter of support from your research mentor and IRB letter of approval. If IRB letter is not available, please explain.

        Please note: Awards given are up to $2,500 per research project. If a group is applying for the award, each member of the group will need to apply and the funding (up to $2500) will be equally distributed among group members. Please reference the other team members in the application. Only one person will need to upload the supporting documents.

        All questions must be completed for the application to be reviewed. If funding is awarded, half of the funds will be released at the time of the award. The remaining funds will be released upon a successful mid-project report. A completion report for our website is required of all successful applicants at the conclusion of your research project.
