The Summer Health Care Experience (SHE) in Oncology Program is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and seeks to increase the participation of women in biomedical fields, especially cancer research and medicine.

Program Information

The SHE program provides a two-week virtual experience for female students from the Mountain West who are going into their sophomore or junior year of high school. The program includes a series of virtual workshops, panels, and hands-on research activities using a laboratory science kit, which will be sent directly to the participant’s home.

  • Week 1: Hands-on Cancer Research
    • Live online laboratory instruction with at-home experiment kit
  • Week 2: Career Exploration in Cancer Research & Medicine
    • Virtual professional development workshop sessions

Program Dates: July 7–18, 2025
8:30 am–12:30 pm MST (Monday–Friday)

Program Virtual Orientation (mandatory): June 30th

Application Opens: February 10, 2025

Application Deadline: April 25, 2025

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a high school student in Utah, Nevada, Montana, Idaho, or Wyoming
  • Must have completed their freshman or sophomore year of high school prior to the program's start (i.e., rising sophomores and juniors)
  • Must be able to commit to four hours of virtual meetings, Monday through Friday, for two weeks in the summer (dates and times specified above)
  • Must have parental or guardian consent

Expectations

  • Student must commit to attending all 40 hours of virtual sessions
  • Students will be asked to complete surveys to evaluate the program
