The Utah Medical Orchestra is open to all orchestral musicians within the healthcare community in Salt Lake City. We hold biannual concerts in the spring and fall, with rehearsals typically held on Tuesday evenings at the Health Sciences Education Building on the University of Utah campus. Each concert cycle includes approximately 10 weeks of rehearsals.
Given the demanding schedules of our musicians, we understand and expect that you may have conflicts with rehearsals. While there is no strict attendance requirement (except for a few specific rehearsals if you’d like to perform in the concert), we hope you will aim to attend at least two-thirds of the rehearsals if you plan to perform. We welcome musicians of all skill levels, but our repertoire is generally suited for intermediate to late-intermediate players.
Auditions are not required for string instruments but are required for new wind and brass players. Auditions will be held 1-2 weeks before the first fall rehearsal. Details and excerpts will be sent to those who express interest.
FAQ's
Everyone is welcome to join, regardless of skill level or playing experience. The repertoire will be chosen to match the approximate average of the group, but you are free to play any or all pieces you feel comfortable with. This is a supportive environment where your presence is valued more than your skill.
The Utah Medical Orchestra rehearses weekly for about 2 hours on Tuesday evenings. We understand that our musicians have demanding schedules, so perfect attendance is not expected or required. You are encouraged to attend any rehearsals you can and may perform in our concert as long as you meet the attendance minimum for that event (typically 2 out of the 3 rehearsals directly preceding the concert).
Additional opportunities to participate in chamber ensembles are optional and require extra rehearsal time.
Health professions trainees, healthcare professionals, staff, graduate students, and faculty in health sciences are all eligible to participate in the Utah Medical Orchestra. You do not need to be affiliated with the University of Utah to join. If you have any questions about joining, please contact us for more information.
Undergraduates and pre-health students are asked to contact us for eligibility.
If you play a non-orchestral instrument (e.g., piano, voice, guitar) and are interested in being involved, please fill out our interest form on the Get Involved tab. We will notify you if opportunities arise for you to participate in the large ensemble or in chamber groups. Please note that chamber ensembles require rehearsal attendance and have rehearsals scheduled outside the Tuesday evening time window.
