The graduate programs listed below offer degrees and faculty mentorship in overlapping areas of interest with the 3i Initiative. For more information on these programs, please follow the links to each programs homepage.

The following graduate programs are associated with the 3i Initiative:

Programs

Biological Chemistry PhD

Designed to provide students and faculty of the University of Utah with excellence in graduate education at the interface of biology and chemistry.  The Biological Chemistry PhD is part of the Bioscience PhD Programs that provide a collaborative and rigorous graduate training environment. The interdisciplinary nature of the programs provide students with a wide-ranging selection of research opportunities. After the first year, students leave the Program and formally join one of the seven science departments above to continue thesis research in the laboratory of a Program faculty member

Biomedical Informatics MS or PhD

Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals may apply for an MS or PhD degree. In addition, the department encourages applications for degree programs from individuals with backgrounds in computer science, engineering, biology, biochemistry, statistics, or other relevant fields.

MD-PhD Program

The MD-PhD Program grants both the MD and Ph.D. degrees to students meeting the requirements of the medical school, the graduate program and the MD-PhD curriculum. The program generally will take seven to nine years to complete. The MD-PhD Program is an ideal choice for students desiring to pursue a career in research/academic medicine.  Students in this program are committed to working in both aspects of medicine and clinical research and pursuing a rigorous, scientific education.

Molecular Biology PhD

Exceptionally collaborative and rigorous interdisciplinary graduate training environment designed to equip students with a strong foundation for a career in the modern biomolecular sciences. The Molecular Biology Program is part of the Bioscience PhD Programs that provide a collaborative and rigorous graduate training environment. The interdisciplinary nature of the programs provide students with a wide-ranging selection of research opportunities. After the first year, students leave the Program and formally join one of the six science departments above to continue thesis research in the laboratory of a Program faculty member

Molecular, Cellular, and Evolutionary Biology PhD

The MCEB program focuses on how complex biological systems emerge from molecules, cells, and genes – the fundamental units of life. Fields strongly represented within MCEB are molecular and cellular biology, developmental biology, Mendelian and quantitative genetics, evolutionary biology, biochemistry, neurobiology, and microbiology. Access to nearby Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics departments, the Brain Institute, and the Center for Cell & Genome Science (CCGS) creates rich opportunities for synergistic cross-disciplinary collaborations and training.

The intended learning outcome for the Molecular, Cellular, and Evolutionary Biology graduate program is to graduate PhD students at the forefront of research and prepare them for careers in research, industry, and education. Training will include oral and written communication skills, critical data evaluation, and hands-on experience with a variety of state-of-the-art research methods.

Neuroscience PhD

Increasingly, progress in the study of neurobiology requires multidisciplinary approaches that draw from electrophysiology, molecular biology, genetics, behavior and cognitive neuroscience. We have created a program that trains students in all of these areas.

Students receive lectures in these diverse topics in the core curriculum and basic lab skills in all areas in the boot camps. Rotations in four laboratories give students broad experience in research questions from these disciplines.

Thesis laboratories are available in over 70 laboratories from 14 participating departments. Students will receive a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, no matter which department they select as their host department.

Lectures from visiting scientists, retreats at the Snowbird Resort, student retreats and Brain Institute symposia expose students to research being conducted internationally. We consider the training of neuroscientists to be our most important mandate.

Microbiology & Immunology PhD

Our goal is to train students w to become innovative and independent researchers with solid generic skills and a strong foundation in Immunology and Microbiology that will prepare you for a variety of careers in Biomedical science and independent research positions. We offer a flexible choice of courses and unique facilities which enable you to incorporate cutting-edge techniques into your research. Our faculty have expertise in a variety of topics spanning from immunology to microbial pathogenesis and basic science research to bench-to-bedside approaches. We cordially invite you to browse our website for more information or contact us with any questions you might have.
