Immunology, Inflammation and Infectious Disease (III) Training Program

The Immunology, Inflammation and Infectious Disease (III) Training Program seeks to bring together faculty and trainees across the University of Utah Health campus to foster collaborative research in basic and translational immunology.  The main component of the III Training Program is individualized research training under the guidance of 30 faculty members in 9 basic and clinical departments across campus. The training program supports 4 pre-doctoral trainees. Pre-doctoral trainees who have completed their qualifying exam are eligible for up to 2 years of support, as selected by the Steering Committee from a large and highly competitive pool of candidates based on prior research excellence, a research proposal and letters of recommendation.  Trainees will complete relevant coursework, participate in seminars and retreats, present their research in departmental settings, write a thesis proposal, perform thesis research, publish results and defend their thesis research.

Microbial Pathogenesis Training Grant

The Microbial Pathogenesis Training Grant is funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Immunology of the NIH, and supports three pre-doctoral and three post-doctoral trainees working on projects in the area of microbial pathogenesis. Microbial Pathogenesis involves the study of the interactions between microbial pathogens and their hosts. Many pathogen virulence factors are only fully understood when investigated in the context of host responses to infection. Our training grant supports research that studies the molecular events involved in microbial infections and host responses. Example pathogenic microbes include bacterial pathogens associated with acute and chronic infections, viral pathogens responsible for HIV and influenza, pathogenic yeast and fungi, and biodefense-related and emerging pathogens.

Bioscience PhD Program - Immunobiology Research Emphasis

The Bioscience PhD Program has an Immunobiology Research Emphasis Area which is a joint effort between faculty of the Department of Pathology/ Division of Microbiology & Immunology, Department of Internal Medicine, Department of Oncological Sciences, Division of Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies and the School of Biological Sciences. The broad scope of our emphasis area is the immune system's role in health and disease from basic (molecular and cellular) to translational research. Our goal is to provide students with an interdisciplinary and advanced understanding of the basic molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in immunity and immune-related diseases, providing an excellent starting point for independent research development and a variety of career options in academia and biotechnology.
