Early Career Coaching (ECC) Program

The program will pair the early career faculty client with a senior faculty coach. The client would commit to following a structured process, facilitated by the coach, over a 6-month period. The coaching process is designed to foster a greater understanding of professional direction within the academic career. The coach and client dyad will partner to translate reflection on professional identity and purpose into actionable goals and steps to help the client navigate this career phase effectively. Creative Career Roadmaps (June 4 & 5)

The Creative Career Roadmap Workshop offers faculty an opportunity to step back, reflect, and intentionally shpae the future of their academic careers. Over two immersive days, participants explore the phases of an academic career, clarify mission and values, craft a professional identity, and navigate choices and transitions with greater confidence. through guided workshops, peer dialogue, and practical tools, faculty develop a clearer, narrative, set meaningful goals, and chart a purposeful path forward in academia Link.  For more information, contact tony.tsai@hsc.utah.edu

Program Goal

The program goal is to increase participants’ clarity on professional direction, satisfaction, self-efficacy, academic productivity, promotion, and sense of community within the University of Utah.

Objectives of The Coaching Program

Early career faculty who complete the program will:

  • Demonstrate increased self-awareness and self-efficacy in their professional trajectory

  • Define goals supported by planning and skills development that build toward an overarching career vision

  • Connect with mentors and colleagues to develop a professional network and sense of community

Coaching Within ECC

Faculty members in the School of Medicine in any track, at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, are eligible to serve as ECC coaches. Each coach is assigned to work with one early career faculty (generally within 5 years of their faculty appointment) member and is expected to meet with the assigned coachee monthly.

In this 6-month coaching engagement, early career faculty in the School of Medicine are partnered with a senior faculty coach. The program goal is to increase participants’ clarity on professional direction, satisfaction, self-efficacy, academic productivity, promotion, and sense of community within the University of Utah. Participants meet monthly with their coach to work through a structured coaching curriculum.
