    2023 SPRING EXHIBIT

    March 28 - April 28

Eccles Health Sciences Library (EHSL) - Main Level

    2019 SPRING EXHIBIT

    April 18 - May 20

See this amazing collection of artistic interpretations of the human side of medicine in which burnout, death, disability, gender, ethics, the art of giving and receiving medical care, and much more are explored through art and artistic expression.

    2018 FALL EXHIBIT

    November 8 - December 7

Experience the loss of a patient and the solitary suffering of chronic pain patients.   Witness the communal metamorphosis of medical students from strangers to family and from students to doctors. Contemplate the messy and unclear lines that dictate what is acceptable in “gallows humor” and who is “worthy or unworthy in medicine.”   Consider how homelessness and other external factors interact with how someone accesses health care or one’s ability to make healthy lifestyle choices.  Appreciate those who become knowledge – the cadavers.

    2018 SPRING EXHIBIT

    April 17 - May 18

Experience disease as one facet contributing to the unique and perfect “circle” of your patient, watch  the stages of grief reveal themselves within a single photo, contemplate the importance of listening fully as a patient speaks, and feel the impact of self-esteem taking a “hit” during medical school.

    2017 FALL EXHIBIT

    November 9 - December 15

Engage in exploring the doors that have opened and shut in your career/life, ponder the impact of burnout, feel the magic of healing, and the despair of loss.

    2017 SPRING EXHIBIT

    May 8 - May 15

The exhibit consists of artistic interpretations of concepts taught in class, which pushes medical students to personally and creatively explore the unique relationships and challenges of practicing medicine.

    2016 FALL EXHIBIT

    November 10 – December 7

Don’t miss this amazing celebration of the creativity of our medical students.  Artistic creations ranging from book art, photographs, drawings, paintings, to written word, sculpture, and collage.

    EXHIBIT DETAILS

Course directors, Gretchen Case, PhD and Karly Pippitt, MD, FAAFP, emphasize the role ethics, humanities, communication, and gender play in giving and receiving medical care. The art project is assigned to the medical students to provide them an opportunity to personally and creatively explore the unique relationships and challenges of practicing medicine. The course directors’ hopes are that students start to think differently about health care, and express their talents and creativity in alternative ways.

EHSL has art space in two locations – Upper Level, West Entrance and Main Level, near the treadmill desks.   Here you will find featured student art from previous Layers of Medicine exhibits.

Make a point to stop by to appreciate and explore these collections.  Dare to be inspired, to question your assumptions, to think differently about health care, and to dive deeply into the challenges and rewards of the human interactions of the practice of medicine.
