Membership Criteria

Specific criteria have been developed for the trainee membership category. 

Trainee Member (Type 4)

This category is available to students (high school, undergraduate, graduate, or medical), postdocs, residents, and fellows affiliated with the University of Utah and being actively mentored by full, associate, or non-program-aligned (Type 1-3) Cancer Center members. Individuals who meet one of the following criteria are eligible to apply:

Students who participate in Huntsman Cancer Institute intern programs are automatically granted membership in this category.

Upon the conclusion of their training, Huntsman Cancer Institute Trainee Members will be granted Huntsman Cancer Institute Trainee Alum status.

Trainee members are not assigned membership to Cancer Center research programs.

  • Eligibility for membership and leadership roles in Huntsman Alliance for Postdocs (Postdocs only)
  • Opportunities to provide input on strategic planning

Institutional Funding Opportunities

  • Eligibility to be nominated for the Susan Cooper Jones Endowed Fellowship in Cancer Research (Postdocs only)
  • Eligibility to apply for Huntsman Cancer Institute-managed limited submission extramural funding opportunities
  • Eligibility to apply for Huntsman Travel Fellowships (Graduate Students and Postdocs)
  • Program Funding
    • Pilot Research: Postdoc members may be named as co-investigators.
    • Travel funding
  • Translational Science Initiative (TSI) Funding
    • Pilot Research: Postdoc members may be named as co-investigators.

Information and Community

  • Receipt of information regarding external funding opportunities (Postdocs only)
  • Receipt of the Huntsman Cancer Institute newsletter; direct notification of Cancer Center seminars and activities
  • Receipt of updates and newsletters from Huntsman Cancer Institute’s Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination office
  • Opportunities to interact with cancer research-oriented colleagues via Huntsman Cancer Institute retreats, symposia, seminars, and meetings
  • Opportunities to nominate and host Huntsman Cancer Institute seminar speakers (Graduate Students and Postdocs only)
  • First priority for trainee meetings with Huntsman Cancer Institute seminar speakers (Graduate Students and Postdocs only)
  • First priority for trainee-focused Huntsman Cancer Institute retreats and workshops
  • Designation as a Huntsman Cancer Institute Trainee and a Huntsman Cancer Institute Trainee Alum upon conclusion of training
  • Eligibility for Trainee Spotlight in Huntsman Cancer Institute newsletters
  • Eligibility for Cancer Center training opportunities
  • Opportunities to participate in mentor training
  • Ongoing opportunities for alumni networking

Membership Responsibilities

All trainee members are expected to:

  • Participate in trainee-focused events, such as symposia and retreats, when possible
  • Take part in Huntsman Cancer Institute’s efforts to track trainee outcomes during and after completion of training
