Screening Brief Intervention Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)
Screening, Brief Intervention, & Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Program
Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is a comprehensive public health approach for delivering early intervention and treatment services to people with, or at risk of developing, substance use disorders.
How Does SBIRT Work?
Health care providers using SBIRT ask patients about substance use during routine medical and dental visits, provide brief advice, and then—if appropriate—refer patients who are at risk of substance use problems to treatment.
Utah Addiction Center (UAC) has a number of skilled SBIRT trainers that are recognized on the National SBIRT Trainers Registry. Training is adapted to the target audience with professional skill development opportunity.
