Made Better By You - The Wellness Bus team hand-written names

The Wellness Bus runs on a simple idea: everyone deserves kind, compassionate care.

For many community members, it’s more than a service. It’s a relationship. And for the team behind The Wellness Bus, their work breaking down barriers—one block, one conversation, one neighbor at a time—is deeply personal.

Today, they’re being recognized by the people who know them best.

Featuring colleagues and friends of Christie Tuck, Alex Hernandez, Maria Hernandez, and Michael Colvin around University of Utah Health and connections from across Utah: Robin Marcus, Nancy Ortiz, Jake Fitisemanu, and many more.

  • Transcript of The Wellness Bus video:

Speaker 1: Come on in. I just want to get some more footage with you guys.

    Speaker 2: Okay.

Speaker 1: You guys are awesome.

Speaker 3: I'm here to get you mic’ed up.

Speaker 1: You just sit in one of the red seats next to each other. Super easy.

    Speaker 4: Oh, wow.

Rep. Jake Fitisemanu: There definitely is a need for the services that The Wellness Bus provides. West Valley City is the second-biggest city in the state of Utah, and it is the most ethnically diverse city in the state. But a city of our size, we also have health disparities. So having a mobile service with people that speak our languages, that look like us, is something that truly is a blessing.
We really want to make this accessible and low barrier. Anybody can come, any age, any income level, no matter where you’re from, and be able to get preventive health care. The folks who are running the bus are fixtures in the community. They’re folks that have been here for a long time, who have that trust that we need, and who really reflect the communities that we serve.

Nancy Ortiz: I mean, this is a team, and this team has been together for several years. They’re just such a cohesive unit and they’re the bus. They know the Wellness Bus.

Rep. Jake Fitisemanu: They have experienced some of those needs themselves, or they have friends and family members who have experienced barriers to health care.

Christie Tuck: I came here as a client before, and now I'm actually enjoying it.

Alex Hernandez: Christie, I would say, was a very lucky find. I think she has fit very well into our team, bringing a new energy and enthusiasm for our program.

Maria Hernandez: She’s friendly with everybody. People love her. We share the same passion, to help people with that, giving those services.

Nancy Ortiz: Maria was, I think, our first hire for the bus.

Robin Marcus: When you ask people in the community, “Who's on that bus?” They’re going to say Maria.

Speaker 11: Maybe you would call her the heart and soul of The Wellness Bus.

Alex Hernandez: It’s inspiring to see her and her dedication to our program, as well as just helping the community in any way she can.

Nancy Ortiz: Alex is our nutritionist health coach, and she serves as kind of our team leader on the bus.

Christie Tuck: I met her as my dietitian, and now she’s my boss.

Maria Hernandez: The one thing I like about her, she has empathy. She has a lot of empathy. Empathy is very important here, empathy for everybody.

Nancy Ortiz: Michael. People love Michael. Another really genuine, caring, compassionate person.

Robin Marcus: There’s a lot to take care of on a 40-foot RV.

Nancy Ortiz: He drives the bus, takes care of the bus, but he also can do the screens.

Alex Hernandez: He’s always got dad jokes.

Christie Tuck: I’m so grateful for him because he introduced me to the bus. If it’s not because of him, I won’t be here.

Rep. Jake Fitisemanu: The Made Better By You philosophy is demonstrated in the way that the university and those that staff the bus are providing services that are tailored and customized to the communities that they serve. By listening to people, by actually integrating feedback, by actually building relationships of trust, I think that’s how they’re really making this better.

Robin Marcus: Having The Wellness Bus in the community, it’s a great way to highlight so many people who work in university health and their passion for taking care of people, both up on the hill, but also in the entire state of Utah.

Alex Hernandez: I guess I would just say it’s overwhelming in a good way. It’s so nice to see so many people be here to support, appreciate, and recognize the work that we do, and I’m very proud to be a part of this team. So thank you, guys.
