Before every patient interaction, there’s an Environmental Services team member who has prepared the space for healing.
Quietly working in the background for the last 18 years, lead EVS technicians A Be and Hilaing La have made our hospitals sparkle and brought joy to patients and everyone they encounter. After a long journey from Myanmar, we’re grateful that the sisters made Utah their home. Today, it’s their turn to take a seat and see just how much they matter.

Amy Albo: You already had your coffee. I know... Good morning! This is April.
April: Hi!
Amy: This is a good place. I didn't even know this existed.
A Be: 28.Amy: Yeah?
A Be: 26.
Amy: I mean, there is always so much laundry.
Hilaing La: I know.
Amy: Why, though?
Hilaing La: Oh, there's Emily. There's boss.
Dave Wiscombe: I'm a supervisor here with EVS, and I've had the privilege of working with both A Be and Hilaing La for two different teams. If EVS didn't do their part, then the doctors, the nurses, things like that, what they do would not happen. You can't open an OR unless it's clean. You can't put a patient in a room unless it's clean.
Emily Young: We're serving people that have gone through big life events. And there are patients here in our rehab hospital [who] stay here for long periods of time.
Dave Wiscombe: People will be here for, on average, about 22 days. So as the staff goes in and out of the rooms, they do get to know some of them because they're talking to them daily when they're in there.
Joshua Fedderson: The power of a smile, especially in a hospital environment, helps the healing process. A Be works perfectly with that because she has a genuine positive smile, and she's always willing to help others.
Dave Wiscombe: I've seen Hilaing La be really good on picking up with that with the individuals and making their time here comfortable.
Muna Gurung: Hilaing La, you are so nice. You make me happy, and you make me comfortable. Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
Hari Adhikari: A Be is a hard worker, nice, everything. She's helpful.
Maribel Mavarez: Thank you very much, Hilaing La. In Thailand, this is khàawp. Hilaing La, khàawp.
Joshua Fedderson: A Be, this is Josh, and I want to tell you that I appreciate you so much as a co-worker. I love the way you work, and your enthusiasm, and your smile especially.
Emily Young: Keep up the good work. I think you're great.
Dave Wiscombe: Well, all of a sudden, I just got teary-eyed. Hilaing La and A Be, I just want to say thank you for everything that you do. I know that you guys are very dedicated to the people that you're working with, and to the patients that come here. Hilaing La, I really appreciate you joking with me and just having that little bit of levity all the time, and knowing that if there is stress going on or things like that, we can work through it together. A Be, when I was watching over the surgical team, you jumped right in, but you helped me learn what you do over in your area, and learn it very quickly. I can't say enough about how much I appreciate working with both of you. And I hope to have a long time of working with you guys as we make this hospital awesome for people to come to.
Hilaing La: Thank you, boss.
Dave Wiscombe: You're so amazing. Did you like it?
Hilaing La: Oh, yeah.
