Acknowledgment

Investigators who use PCM services, models, animals, reagents, managed devices or equipment, data, or other support should acknowledge the Preclinical Cancer Models Shared Resource in resulting scholarly products.

Proper acknowledgment is important because it documents the scientific impact of PCM and helps support continued institutional and external funding for the Shared Resource.

When to Acknowledge PCM

Please acknowledge PCM in any work that benefited from PCM support, including use of:

  • services or scientific expertise
  • patient-derived or other cancer models
  • mice or other animals supported through PCM
  • reagents or other shared materials
  • PCM-managed devices, instrumentation, or equipment
  • data or study support provided through PCM

Acknowledgment should be included in any resulting:

  • manuscripts and other publications
  • abstracts
  • posters
  • presentations
  • grant applications

Suggested Acknowledgment Language

We acknowledge support from the Preclinical Cancer Models Shared Resource at Huntsman Cancer Institute and from HCI's National Cancer Institute Cancer Center Support Grant P30CA042014.

If appropriate, investigators may also briefly specify the type of support received from PCM, such as patient-derived models, in vivo services, organoid studies, mice, imaging, irradiation, device use, or study design support.

Additional Acknowledgment

If a project involved coordinated support from other Shared Resources or institutional partners, additional acknowledgment of those contributors may also be appropriate.

Authorship

Shared Resource personnel are scientists whose contributions may extend beyond routine technical services. Fee-for-service work does not preclude authorship. When Shared Resource personnel make substantial intellectual and/or experimental contributions to a study, they should be recognized through co-authorship.

Examples of contributions that may support co-authorship include meaningful involvement in study conception, experimental design, development or adaptation of methods, interpretation of results, execution of complex experimental work requiring substantial scientific judgment, or other contributions that go beyond routine technical support.

Routine technical services alone may be more appropriately recognized through acknowledgment rather than authorship.

Authorship should be discussed early in the course of a project and revisited as needed as the work evolves.

Related Guidance

For broader guidance on authorship, investigators should follow applicable journal policies and established standards, including the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) Recommendations and ABRF authorship guidance for shared resources and core facilities.

Reporting Publications

Investigators are encouraged to send citations or copies of publications acknowledging PCM so that Shared Resource impact can be tracked accurately for reporting and continued program support.
