RAI Faculty Fellowships

Deadline: September 1, 2026

Description: Each year, the University of Utah One-U Responsible Artificial Intelligence Initiative (One-U RAI) will award several faculty fellows aligned with one or more of the initiative's thematic areas: 1) Environment, 2) Healthcare and Wellness, and 3) Teaching and Learning. One-U RAI faculty fellows will be awarded for three years, with opportunity for renewal. As a fellow, the faculty member will be awarded an annual stipend equivalent to 25% of their base salary, bounded such that a minimum award will cover the average annual stipend and benefits for a graduate student within the awardee’s department and a maximum award will be $75,000. The award can be used at the discretion of the awardee to facilitate research as part of this initiative. One-U RAI faculty fellows will be expected to participate in the One-U RAI community through activities and research. In addition, the fellow will be granted a research appointment at the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute, which will include access to services as appropriate, and will be given opportunities for involvement with the One-U RAI Executive Committee.

Philanthropic Partners Group Innovator Awards 2027

Award: Up to $90,000

Description: The University of Utah Health Philanthropic Partners, a group comprised of ambitious philanthropists who wish to accelerate research at University of Utah Health, have been formed to ignite innovation in today’s challenging funding climate. Strategically targeting vital areas of need with pooled resources and motivated by the pursuit of discovery, the Philanthropic Partners will propel a straightforward idea that forms the bedrock of exceptional achievement: empowering the most brilliant minds to push the boundaries of their abilities and venture into uncharted territories will pave the way for a brighter and more promising tomorrow. The Philanthropic Partners invite proposals from researchers with inventive and innovative ideas who are seeking seed funding to accelerate breakthroughs and test new ideas that are not yet viable for traditional funding mechanisms. The goal of this initiative is to ignite high-risk, potentially high-reward research programs that address critical societal issues and foster innovation, discovery, and collaboration in Health Sciences. By providing grants up to $90,000 in 2027, the Philanthropic Partners aim to enhance support for early-stage (Assistant/Associate professors) researchers’ efforts that have the potential to significantly impact their respective fields.

Reminder: High Tech West 2027-2028

Deadline: October 1st, 2026

Description: The Office of the Vice President for Research invites you to submit a proposal for the2026-2027 High Tech West pitch competition to be held on Thursday, February 25th, 2027! High Tech West is again being offered to the University of Utah translational research community as a pitch event that unites leading research experts, industry partners, and legislative representatives to explore groundbreaking technologies, innovative ideas, and holistic solutions to tackle pressing national security challenges confronting our democracy. As the university’s largest source of intramural research funding supporting current national security research priorities, High Tech West 2027 hopes to attract researchers contributing to key national security research projects supporting the 2026 DOW Critical Technology Areas and the FY27 White House R&D Budgetary Priorities. High Tech West 2027 seeks interdisciplinary research teams from across campus who have unique solutions to pressing national security challenges. This year, High Tech West will focus on earlier, lower Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), primarily innovation at the TRL 1-3 level supporting these two opportunity tracks: Track 1) Engineering, Space & Defense Systems, & Track 2) Health, Biotechnology & Military Medicine.

NSF launches Project Triad to advance quantum technology for real-world applications

Description: The U.S. National Science Foundation today announced Project Triad, a first-of-its-kind initiative to integrate quantum sensing, quantum networking and quantum computing into a single operational system. By bringing these three capabilities together for the first time, Project Triad will move quantum technology out of the lab and into real-world use — with applications spanning safety, healthcare, energy, manufacturing and more.

Coefficient Giving: Global Health and Wellbeing in an Era of Transformative AI

Deadline: August 21, 2026

Description: This RFP will support research, policy development, implementation, and field-building to help ensure AI improves human health and wellbeing, with particular attention to risks for and benefits to the global poor. Examples of projects we might want to support include: research on how global health grantmaking should respond to advances in AI, a technical assistance program to make emerging economies more robust to AI labor market disruption, or efforts to build clinical trial and regulatory infrastructure in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) before AI-enabled treatments outpace the systems meant to deliver them. NIH Released Five PRIMED-AI RFAs

Deadlines: October 2 – October 19, 2026 (varies by RFA)

Description: The goal of these companion opportunities is to establish the Precision Medicine with AI: Integrating Imaging with Multimodal Data (PRIMED-AI) Program to support the development of innovative, reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable multimodal AI-based clinical decision support (CDS) tools. PRIMED-AI CDS tools are based on the integration of clinical imaging with other types of multimodal health data to enhance care for patients with a wide range of health conditions.

UChicago Reproducibility Ambassador (RepAmb) PhD Student Travel Grants

Award: $1,000 travel grant to present at a conference

Deadline: Rolling (apply ASAP).

Description: Have your eye on a conference taking place this year, but need some sponsorship to get there? Have you conducted research or packaged experiments on Chameleon and Trovi? Want an experience that will provide valuable insights on how you can make your research more reproducible and effective? 

We’re excited to announce that we still have limited spots available for our Reproducibility Ambassador (RepAmb) program.

Submit an interest form or email Marc Richardson (mtrichardson@uchicago.edu) and Rani Irawan (raniayu@uchicago.edu) with the Subject: “RepAmb: Application Inquiry”. If you are selected, you’ll receive a travel grant through reimbursement (travel + registration fees) to attend a conference of your choosing.

 Reproducibility Ambassadors will

  1. Package two experiments of their choice from their selected conference (published in recent years),
  2. Upload two short videos (2-3 mins) showcasing each artifact on YouTube,
  3. Attend the selected conference and organize a small event on reproducibility (birds of a feather, coffee chat, poster session, etc., depending on the conference organization).

Ambassadors are encouraged to engage generally with the community on common reproducibility challenges throughout the conference. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Funds are limited. Apply ASAP to ensure a spot.
