Goodbye Twinkies, Be Well Utah

Unfortunately, I don’t get that endorphin rush that motivates so many to exercise.
I grew up in a family that lived a sedentary lifestyle. We thought that a walk around the block was a reasonable amount of exercise… for the week. Bespectacled and smaller than my peers, I was the last person picked for the dodge ball team at school. I also come from a family that was totally food-obsessed, which mostly translated to quantity over quality. Over time, with the advent of super-mega-Chinese-food buffets we have come to believe that both are attainable—and for just $6.99 for lunch and $9.99 for dinner! When I was young, I had been known to breakfast on Twinkies, thinking I was definitely covering two of the major food groups: that fiber-filled sponge cake for grains and, of course the yummy white filling for dairy.
Two years ago, our family moved to Salt Lake City, and more than ever, we have been able to embrace a healthy lifestyle. My husband and I get onto the Stairmaster and Exercycle most mornings. Personally, I love the handlebar configuration so that I can do emails while exercising. That doesn’t take the place of endorphin motivation, but at least it satisfies my email compulsions.
Here in Utah, the most remarkable natural environment and a culture that embraces a diversity of all skills surround us. My family and I are slowly and carefully getting better at skiing, and we love it. The hiking and biking options are limitless with the changing seasons keeping all hikes fresh. And within a days drive, Utah is just paradise.
We admire the culture of homegrown food here and have started growing a few vegetables ourselves. In the current “omnivore’s dilemma” environment, we avoid processed foods now (good-bye Twinkies) and embrace fresh fruit and veggies.
So as we move into the week of Be Well Utah. I invite you to join us… Put the health back into health care.
